Hizb man spends quiet day in Tihar

Suspected Hizbul Mujahideen militant Syed Liyaqat Shah is under round-the-clock surveillance in Tihar's jail number 4. He has been placed in a barrack inside ward number 1, which has CCTV cameras, jail officials said.

Lodged with around 15 jail inmates undergoing trial for various cases, ranging from murder to kidnapping, Liyaqat's first night at Tihar Jail went without incident. He is a quiet man and has not made any demands, the officials said.

"He remained quiet during his health and psychology test and did not make any requests from the jail administration. He has kept to himself and not interacted with any of the inmates. He has watched television with the other inmates in the barrack," said a jail source.

The jail has two types of accommodation: cells and barracks. While three to four inmates are lodged in a cell, barracks have 15-20 inmates each. "Liyaqat has been placed in a barrack as it has CCTV surveillance. Jail authorities did not want to take a chance after Ram Singh's death. Liyaqat has been eating regular prison food comprising dal, roti and subzi. He has not made any special demand for food, jail officials said. "He has not made a request to meet his family, nor has he inquired about the process," added the source.

National Investigation Agency might move the special NIA court for his custody on Monday. The agency is said to have registered a case against Liyaqat and other unnamed Hizb militants on Friday.
