Crews blast ice to recover car, body submerged at Fitzroy



Emergency crews were using explosives Monday to clear ice that was hampering efforts to recover a car and the male body it contains from the Ottawa River at Fitzroy.

Ottawa police said the ice was too thin to support equipment to saw through the ice and create an opening for the car to be pulled from about nine metres of water near the dock of the Fitzroy-Quyon ferry.

Later on Friday, car debris was spotted close to the shoreline near the dock. A six-person Ottawa police marine dive unit as well as the collision investigation unit began searching the river.

The car was located on Saturday night, upside down in the water and with one window partially opened.

Police could not comment on their efforts to locate a second body.

The case remains under investigation and police stressed they can’t form any firm theories before gaining access to the car and having an autopsy done on the one body located so far.
