Main beach crime leads to CCTV push

A RISE in bag snatchings and petty crime in once opulent Main Beach has sparked calls for CCTV cameras to be installed in Tedder Ave.2013 pinarello dogma XC 9.9. Pinarello brings innovation to the 29er market with the release of the Dogma XC 9.9 mountain bike frame.

Main Beach resident Chris Trueman said a bag snatching she saw on Wednesday night was just the latest example of Main Beach's downward spiral.

"It was a nice, civilised, quaint area but it's being taken over by violence and hooligans," Ms Trueman said.

"It never used to be like this -- it was a sleepy little village.

"I don't even feel safe walking near my home."

Ms Trueman saw a young man and woman, aged about 19, snatching a woman's handbag from outside the Domanis restaurant in Tedder Ave late on Wednesday night.

Five by-standers caught the two would-be thieves and recovered the bag, but police could not arrest anyone because the victim did not want to press charges, she said.

"He just didn't care."

Ms Trueman said it was not uncommon to see "drunken lads" hanging out on the streets late at night.

She said CCTV cameras in the street would deter the petty crime which was ruining their neighbourhood.

"There's a council push to get more security cameras and lights in other areas, but Main Beach is missing out," she said.

Surfers Paradise police refused to discuss the problem with the Bulletin.

Main Beach Progress Association secretary Georgie Brown said the rise in petty crime usually coincided with major Gold Coast events including Schoolies, the GC600 and Magic Millions.

Ms Brown said previous calls for CCTV cameras to be installed in Tedder Ave had been shouted down because of privacy concerns.

Surfers Paradise councillor Lex Bell said he would consult with residents and push for CCTV cameras at the June budget if the community made it clear they wanted them.

"I'm very happy to explore the idea of cameras in Main Beach, if that's the community's wish," Cr Bell said.
